MCD [Mulesoft Certified Developer] LEVEL – 1 (Mule 4)

I am writing this blog to share my experience while preparing and taking up this certification exam, as many colleagues are seeking information around it.

Enrollment

I was planning to attempt MuleSoft Certified Platform Architect – Level 1 or MuleSoft Certified Integration Architect – Level 1, as I have prior work experience with Mulesoft and have had two certifications:

  1. MCD – Integration and API Associate (Mule 3.7)
  2. MCD – API Design Associate

But, both of these certifications were expired (since MCD certifications are valid only for 2 years). That’s why, I had to attempt afresh and appear for MuleSoft Certified Developer – Level 1 (Mule 4) first. I didn’t opt to go for Delta test, which is also available for candidates upgrading their knowledge from Mule 3 to Mule 4.

Note: FYI, there are lot of fundamental changes in Mule4 – Many concepts of Mule 3 are no longer available in Mule 4. This page summarizes the difference.

As part of Salesforce Certification Pledge Program, I registered for MCD Level 1 (Mule 4) exam and targeted to appear for exam before 30th June 2020.

Preparation

MCD Level-1 (Mule 4) exam is divided into these topics:

  • Creating Application Networks
  • Designing APIs
  • Building API Implementation Interfaces
  • Deploying and Managing APIs and Integrations
  • Accessing and Modifying Mule Events
  • Structuring Mule Applications
  • Routing Events
  • Handling Errors
  • Troubleshooting and Testing Mule Applications
  • Writing DataWeave Transformations
  • Using Connectors
  • Processing Records

Here are some basic resources that I referred for preparation:

Anypoint Platform Development: Fundamentals (Mule 4)

MCD – Level 1 / Development Fundamentals (Mule 4) Quiz & DIY Exercises

API Design Quiz (RAML 1.0)

While preparing, I also made some notes (Link) for reviewing main topics quickly. It may be helpful for you too. [ PS – you may need to be on public network to access the notes ]

Some additional resources/practice papers that could be referred are:

For Mulesoft exams, Udemy has most of the quality contents. I didn’t find Mulesoft related contents on ACloudGuru, Coursera or other renowned sites.

Note: I can’t comment on their quality though, as I have not gone through them. However, Udemy courses and practice papers should be good, that’s what I have heard.

Exam Registration

Around 20th june, when I received the voucher, I tried to register for exam. Unfortunately, I didn’t get available exam date in June. Earliest possible date was 6th July. I waited for couple of days to see if there are any cancellations and I could get an earlier date. But, no luck !! Even 6th June was full and I had to register the exam for 14th July 2020.

I scheduled the exam for around 9 PM. Mostly because, there is less chance of power-cut during that time in my area. Also, there would be less movement of people in night (as I stay on ground floor).

Please remember to complete these activities before the exam day :

  • Install Sentinel
  • Enroll in Biometrics

Exam Day

On Exam day, I started the exam right on time. Surprisingly, exam started with a small survey questions that could be skipped. Usually, surveys are by the end of exams. Anyways, I attempted those survey questions too (those are obviously not marked).

During the exam I got two interruptions:

  1. Test got interrupted (while time keeps on running) and Invigilator asked me over chat to speak my name. He confirmed that he is able to hear me fine and then allowed me to continue the exam. He also said that he will provide extra time in lieu of missing time due to interruption.
  2. Second interruption got me tensed, as it said ” No video streaming… bla blah.. if support doesn’t interact with you over chat in next 5 minutes, please call customer care numbers XXXXX”. Luckily, I got invigilator’s ping in 3-4 minutes stating that now he is able to see the video. I requested him to quickly reinstate my test session and he did.

My suggestion during interruptions (if any) – Please be patient and don’t panic.

Results

As soon as I submitted my exam, I could see “Pass” status along with a consolidated summary of all 13 Topics along with corresponding scores that I achieved. Was really glad to see that  as most of those were 100% and some in 80-85%. An email is also received with same summary immediately.

The certificate should be available on https://training.mulesoft.com in next 5-7 days. I’ll update the blog when certificate is available for download.

That’s all for now. Please feel free to ask any question in comments section. I would be glad to answer to the best of my knowledge.

Best of Luck for your exams !!
